A church in Novelda has employed a unique team of security guards, equipped with feather, wings and talons.

The Archpriest in the Parish of San Pedro has installed a nest of three breeding owls which he hopes will control a growing problem of rodents entering the church and damaging items.

According to the Noveldense town hall, this initiative is part of a project that will last five years and has chosen three owls from the Wildlife Recovery Center of Santa Faz.

The birds will have some freedom to move around the church, although they will not be able to leave.

Although the owls will be subject to a performance review, it is possible that they can control (kill and eat) around 100 mice each month.
